The Power Plant building was once a former coal factory. With careful design and preservation of the buildings unique features, it still tells the story of its past.
The Haslam Sports Group needed a new office space for the Columbus Crew. After recruiting The Columbus Architectural Studio to do a case study between the Historic Stadium and the Municipal Light and Power Plant building, it became undeniable that the old city power station would be their new location. The proximity to their stadium allowed for impeccable views from the upper patio while creating a more unified team between the staff and players. And just like that, the Columbus Crew pinned their yellow banner to the old smokestack and called at home.
The Studio carefully planned the office in a way that paid homage to the building’s rich history while seamlessly adding contemporary elements. Upon entering the lobby, one is greeted with an old vault door, exposed trusses that intermingle antique cranes from their industrial use and modern pendant lighting. From the antique yellow tinted tiles, old glass block windows, to an old coiling door in the conference room, there are subtle nods of its past throughout the building. One of the more unique features of the structure is the massive coal shoot that spans across the open office. Tying in the grit and the industrial nature of the space, The Studio made it a focal point rather than remove it.
Knowing the Crew‘s desire for ease of communication, access, and collaboration between all parts of the company meant The Studio would focus on openness and connectivity in the building. To create fluidity between all three levels and respect the historical integrity of the space, they opted to tie the floors together with an industrial black metal staircase. To keep the space airy and open, they exposed the ceilings and brought in glass walls to help move around light. Throughout the revitalization process, the firm was mindful of accessibility by focusing on universal design principles to ensure equal access and inclusivity. The preservation at the Power Plant showcases how historical preservation projects can become a modern sanctuary for productivity and inspiration.
Furthering the relationship with Haslam Sports Group, The Columbus Architectural Studio created an elevated experience to watch the game through the Theatre Box Seats.
