Bringing Design to Life: A Site Visit to Two Twenty Vine Street

Posted by Bayli Friz | March 31, 2025 | Culture

At The Columbus Architectural Studio, we take pride in creating spaces that are not only visually striking but also seamlessly integrated into the neighborhoods we build in. A recent site visit to the firm’s multifamily residential project, Two Twenty Vine Street, provided a moment to reflect on such work. As the project neared completion, our team walked the site, engaged in discussions, and explored the history behind the design. Some members saw their drawings come to life while others reflected on details.

Designing for Functionality and Comfort

Originally designed in 2019, the project faced delays due to the pandemic, with construction finally resuming in 2023. However, throughout this period, our firm—led by architects Yen and Dan Hanes—continued work on a key element: the parking garage. Designed with cohesion and precision, the garage seamlessly integrates with the residential structure. Despite the phased approach, the exterior brickwork ensures a unified aesthetic between both buildings. Inside the garage, each level aligns with the apartment floor to ensure direct access for each resident. That detailing was pivotal in ensuring everyday tasks such as carrying groceries were convenient. This design choice resonated with Elizabeth Kruggel, who wasn’t involved in the project but was struck by its thoughtfulness:

I loved the thoughtfulness that went into the comfort of the future residents. What impressed me most was the parking garage meeting each floor of the apartment complex perfectly; ensuring there isn’t a displacement of parking vs. where they live.

She believes that pulling from such examples of prioritizing the resident experience will better enhance her future projects.

Seeing the Vision Come to Life

Before the first residents moved in, lead architect Abbie Stiers guided the group and shared insights into the design process. As the group walked the project, she was able to point out unique design moments, and moments for creative problem-solving, and highlight aspects of construction management. The site’s natural grading held opportunities for thoughtful design solutions regarding layout and number of floors. The subtle curve toward Vine Street further enhances the building’s relationship with its surroundings. Landscaping and signage create a simple yet refined experience for users and viewers alike. Prioritizing privacy the building forgoes a traditional main lobby by offering a more discreet and secure entry experience. The dark metal industrial security gate plays into the darker brick facade and landscape, reinforcing the building’s cohesive aesthetic.

For Juan Varela, the site visit was particularly rewarding. Having worked on the fencing details, he saw how his design choices contributed to both function and aesthetics, further strengthening the building’s connection to the neighborhood.

Understanding Intent

As with many Nationwide Realty Investor properties, Two Twenty Vine Street offers a range of amenities, including a courtyard with a pool, green space for dogs, and an outdoor grilling area. The apartment layouts range from one to three bedrooms and are designed for flexibility and comfort. They feature a spacious living area, pull in an abundance of natural light, and showcase the downtown skyline views. The neutral palette invites residents to personalize their space. After walking the space Bayli Friz feels she gained a better understanding of The Studio’s long-time client needs. She stated:

Whereas I didn’t work on this project, I am working with this NRI [Nationwide Realty Investors] on another project. Getting to see the apartment layouts, finish selections, and the intention of the space helps me better align myself to their needs. It was really insightful as a new designer.

Looking Ahead

In the design field, site visits provide invaluable hands-on learning experiences, offering insight into the decision-making process that shapes a project’s final form. For Minnie Huynh, they also create a sense of accomplishment:

As one of the projects that I worked on, being able to see it near completion is very rewarding. Standing in the space and going ‘It’s just like how I drew it!’ is always very fun.

From concept to completion, Two Twenty Vine Street reflects The Studio’s commitment to intentional, human-centered design. Every element—whether structural, aesthetic, or functional—was carefully considered to create a living space that enhances everyday life. As the project nears full occupancy, we’re excited to see it come to life, welcoming new residents and adding another thoughtfully designed space to the heart of Columbus.
